SUMMARY:Virtual - National ADA Symposium Spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Skulski will present sessions during the 3-day virtual ADA Symposium hosted by the Great Plains ADA Center. Registration is now open. Check out the following session: \n\n5C) Beyond the Minimums: Universal Design as a Strategy for Building Inclusive Communities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ADA Standards set the minimum\, but Universal Design imagines the maximum benefit for all users—children\, older adults\, and people with diverse abilities. Many organizations miss the chance to improve usability for everyone while making accessibility improvements. This session explores the seven principles of Universal Design and shows how they can enhance parks\, trails\, recreation facilities\, and public spaces. Here we will bridge the gap between minimum legal requirements and optimal user experiences\, empowering professionals to champion inclusion in capital projects and ADA transition planning to build more inclusive communities.

SUMMARY:Webinar - The Bumpy Path Ahead: Accessibility Considerations for Exterior Surfaces
DESCRIPTION:Firm? Stable? Slip resistant? Excessive running slope? Who said cross-slope? What level? Grass is accessible\, right? How do you really know if the surface material you are using on accessible routes\, a pedestrian trail\, shared use path\, within a pedestrian access route\, picnic area\, or playground really is accessible and ADA compliant for the facility you are constructing or altering meets the minimums in the ADA Accessibility Standards? In this session\, leading national experts on park and recreation access\, Bill Botten and Jennifer Skulski will cover the ADA Accessibility Standards and special considerations to make sure your outdoor surfaces are designed\, installed\, and maintained to be usable by people with disabilities.

SUMMARY:2026 National ADA Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Things that Make You Go Hmmm…. Recreation Edition!\nPresented by Jennifer Skulski and Bill Botten\nDisc golf courses\, splash pads\, mounds on playgrounds\, community gardens\, lending libraries\, skate parks\, and surf parks. Do you sometimes just scratch your head and wonder\, “Hmmm….. how DO the accessibility standards apply to these spaces?” When these spaces don’t fit neatly into the ADA playbook\, compliance can be puzzling. This session blends real-life examples with practical guidance to help you apply the accessibility standards and confidently provide unique recreation facilities that are welcoming and inclusive of people with disabilities. \nTitle II: The Self-Evaluation & Transition Plan\nPresented by Jennifer Skulski\nSo what exactly IS the difference between an ADA Self Evaluation and a Transition Plan? This session is the launch pad for all Title II ADA Coordinators. Here we will cover the administrative requirements under Title II\, the difference between an ADA Coordinator and a Designated Responsible Employee\, the Notice to Public\, engagement including people with disabilities\, and the components of an effective self-evaluation and transition plan. We will also discuss some instances where it might be necessary to revisit a public entity’s self-evaluation and transition plan\, along with best practices for the ADA Coordinator to implement an ADA Action Plan.
