ADA Symposium 2021 – Phoenix

July 26 - July 28

7B) Is Your Playground Surface Crying for an ADA Complaint?
Presented by Jennifer Skulski

The design, installation and maintenance of playground surfaces still pose the biggest barrier to inclusion for children with disabilities and adult supervisors with mobility impairments. Lack of attention to those details could mean your playground surface is crying out loud for an ADA complaint. Jennifer Skulski has conducted the most comprehensive research on the accessibility of playground surfaces. In this session, she will illustrate some of the most common barriers created by the design, installation and maintenance of various playground surfaces and techniques to provide greater access for users with disabilities. Most importantly, she will share performance-based criteria that you can include in the bid specifications for your next playground and field-testing protocol to ensure the product performs as stated by the manufacturer.

9B) What’s Wrong with this Picture?
Presented by Jennifer Skulski

Keep your next accessibility improvement from becoming a VIRAL FAIL! After first introducing this session 20 years ago, time confirms…a triangle on paper is not a compliant ramp and ugly tile can still make for an accessible toilet compartment. This side-splitting session will highlight how a well-intended fix can go wrong, common misinterpretations of the standards, and other goofy remedies that will make you scratch your head and say, “HUH?”
